Introduction to Patents

Introduction to Patents

Brought to you by Virginia Tech's Patent and Trademark Resource Center, this workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning more about patents, a form of intellectual property (IP) for protecting inventions. This introductory workshop will be especially helpful for those who have an invention or are thinking about applying for a patent.

Attendees will learn about the 3 main types of patents (utility, design, and plant), including examples drawn from the toy industry. This workshop will also cover how to get started with searching USPTO's Patent Public Search and other patent databases, a key step to make sure your invention is novel, one of the key conditions of patentability. The workshop will conclude with resources and tips on applying for patents.

** This workshop is being offered in a hybrid format with edible IP and toys for the in-person attendees. If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please email sarah.over@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to the event.
