Women of Appalachia: Food, Drink, and Community in the Twentieth Century
Special Collections and University Archives will be hosting an exhibit, “Women of Appalachia: Food, Drink, and Community in the Twentieth Century,” for the month of March. This exhibit will feature books, manuscript materials, photographs, and artifacts from our collections that highlight contributions by and about women in Appalachia. Materials will showcase the history of food, drink, and community-building in its many forms, from mobile libraries to agricultural practices to kitchen items. Join us on the 4th floor of Newman Library during open hours to learn more about this amazing history!
This exhibit was curated by Kaitlynn Harless, Graduate Assistant for Special Collections and University Archives. She is in her second year in the History Master’s program, and she researches women, gender, and activist history in southern West Virginia in the early twentieth century. This exhibit is part of Virginia Tech’s Women’s History Month 2024 activities.
This exhibit showcases a small part of the history of women in the Appalachian region, with focuses on food history, crafting, and activism. Kaitlynn hopes that the exhibit sparks your curiosity in history and the Appalachian region.
