What's the Impact? How to Wisely Use Bibliographic Databases and their Publication and Citation Data

Large commercial bibliographic databases, such as Web of Science and Scopus, serve as major data sources for academic publication and citation data for research institutions. In addition, free bibliographic and bibliometric data sources and tools, such as Google Scholar and The Lens, can help researchers find more comprehensive publication and citation data for analyzing their reach and impact. This workshop will review the different bibliographic data sources, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to use them to your advantage. The workshop will also briefly introduce Publish or Perish, an open source software tool that can pull out Google Scholar data and analyze it.* Finally, this workshop will discuss the geographic and language biases and coverage of large commercial bibliographic databases.

Join us in Newman Library (Torgerson 3310 on the library 4th floor near the bridge) or online! We'll have Love Data Week themed treats for those who join in person as well!

If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please email library-event-accessibility-g@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to the event. If you are joining in person and have food allergies or dietary restrictions, please email ndporter@vt.edu and we will try to ensure we have something for you.

*If you are using a university computer or laptop, you will need to submit a ITPALS Low-Risk Low-Cost Software Request, which qualifies for expedited purchasing, to be able to use the Publish or Perish (PoP) software on your machine (available for download at https://harzing.com/resources/publish-or-perish). However, you do not need to have this software on your machine to attend the workshop. We will mainly be working in the databases with some brief demos within PoP.
