Archival Adventures: Civil War Aeronautics

Archival Adventures: Civil War Aeronautics

Up, Up, and Away in our beautiful balloons! This week ArchivistAnthony will be exploring the history of aeronautics during the American Civil War. Civil War aeronautics involved the use of balloons for military aerial reconnaissance. The men who piloted the balloons were called aeronauts, and were members of the Aeronautical Corps, or the Union Army Balloon Corps. The idea behind the use of balloons during the Civil War came when President Lincoln learned about the expertise of Professor Thaddeus Lowe, and made him the first Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army Balloon Corps. Today, Professor Lowe is commonly referred to as the father of the United States Air Force. Learn more about the items we will be exploring: bit.ly/ArchivalAdventures160
