Archival Adventures: West Virginia Hillbilly
It's time for an adventure! This week we’re heading to the 1960s for a look at the West Virginia Hillbilly, a weekly newspaper started by Jim Comstock in the late 1950s and active until 1984. At its peak, the paper reached 20,000 to 30,000 readers across 40 states and six countries. It featured a humorous tone while commenting on politics and society. Comstock was a high school teacher before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then began his career as a newspaperman.
Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libaries' Youtube page.
