Using ChatGPT and Google Gemini for Professional Tasks in Academia

A PRESENTATION BY Dr. Seungwon Yang

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) have opened exciting new possibilities for enhancing higher education. This AI-based chatbot has a lot of potential to improve academic work efficiency by interacting with users in a conversational way, using human-like language to answer questions and generate content.

Specifically, ChatGPT has been used to support faculty work, including research and teaching. However, there have been limited opportunities to support faculty members learning and applying ChatGPT efficiently and effectively in their academic work practices, addressing ethical and privacy concerns involved with ChatGPT.
The purpose of this talk is to guide participants on how to apply ChatGPT to enhance faculty work (research, teaching, and service) through practical examples and/or demos by using prompt patterns and useful tips. The expected outcomes include: (a) increasing knowledge and understanding about using ChatGPT in personalized ways and (b) improving individual capability of applying specific prompt patterns to various academic tasks.

Dr. Seungwon Yang is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment both in the School of Information Studies and the Center for Computation and Technology at Louisiana State University. He received his academic degrees from Bachelor's to Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. His main research area includes social media data analysis, crisis informatics, and machine/deep learning applications. He has been offering the LLM AI workshops in different venues including LSU, Academy of Management conference, Korean-American University Professors Association (online setting), Southeastern Louisiana University, to name a few. In his free time, he explores hiking trails or swamps of Louisiana with his son and wife.
