Library Carpentry: Practical tools for working with data

Library Carpentry: Practical tools for working with data

Library Carpentry workshops teach people working in library- and information-related roles how to:

Cut through the jargon terms and phrases of software development and data science and apply concepts from these fields in library tasks;
-Identify and use best practices in data structures;
-Learn how to programmatically transform and map data from one form to another;
-Work effectively with researchers, IT, and systems colleagues;
-Automate repetitive, error prone tasks.

By the end of the workshop, participants will learn and practice:
-Using regular expression to find and select data
-Working with files, directories and data manipulation from the command line
-Formatting, cleaning and exporting data in a spreadsheet (like Excel or Google Sheets)
-Harnessing OpenRefine to clean and transform data

The workshop will take place every morning from 8-Noon (EDT), June 14-17. Registering once will ensure you can attend the entire workshop. While targeted to the skills most important for library workers, the workshop is open to anyone.

You do not need any experience to participate but you will need access to a WIndows, Mac or Linux computer. The workshop will be hosted online using Zoom; instructions for accessing course material and installing software will be sent in advance. For questions, contact Data Education Coordinator Nathaniel Porter (ndporter@vt.edu).

If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please email library-event-accessibility-g@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to the event.
