Menus to Code: Navigating the Transition from Graphical and Menu-Driven Data Analysis to Statistical Programming

Menus to Code: Navigating the Transition from Graphical and Menu-Driven Data Analysis to Statistical Programming

Learn how to confidently make the jump from graphical and menu-driven data analysis (SPSS, Stata, Tableau, JMP, etc.) to statistical programming in languages like R and Python! This workshop will take place in a hybrid model, in-person on the VT Blacksburg Campus and online via Zoom.

Undergraduate and even graduate methods training often relies on point-and-click tools for data analysis. While these tools are powerful and important, they can be expensive and do not have the flexibilty or transparency of code-based tools. This workshop is designed to help you translate existing workflows into pseudocode and diagrams that can be integrated into your programming language of choice. Additionally, the workshop will introduce common language and structures from programming and provide tools and recommendations for building code literacy and solving problems.

This workshop is open to anyone, but the target audience is those with little or no programming experience, but experience working with data in at least one point-and-click statistical analysis package. This is a no-code workshop; you will learn concepts and models for coding but not a specific coding language.

For maximum value, this workshop is designed to complement Software Carpentry, which will be offered both online and in-person between August 3 and August 12, 2021. Participants in Software Carpentry will be provided with supplemental information on converting SPSS and Stata commands to Python or R. Please visit the LIbrary Calendar main page and search for Carpentry to discover avaialble options.
