Archival Adventures: Nuclear Ship Savannah

Archival Adventures: Nuclear Ship Savannah

It's time for an adventure! This week we're heading back to the Atomic Age to explore the launch of the Nuclear Ship Savannah with the John W. Landis Papers. Launched in 1959 as part of President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace program, the N.S. Savannah was the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship (i.e., a ship designed to carry passengers or cargo). Landis was Assistant Manager of the Babcock and Wilcox Company's Atomic Energy Division at the time of the ship's launch and was involved with the ship's construction.

Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libaries' Youtube page.

If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please email library-event-accessibility-g@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to the event.
