Visualizing Flow with Sankeymatic

Visualizing Flow with Sankeymatic

Learn to create powerful visualizations of flow with the free, browser-based tool Sankeymatic! Sankey diagrams are useful for visualizing the “flow” between entities within your data, as well as processes could be best explained with best graphicly. These “flows” and processes can have a “weight” that depicts the quantity of a flow, or importance. Sound confusing? It’s not!

This hands-on introductory workshop will take place online and in-person and requires no experience, but you will need a computer to follow along and create your own diagram. In addition to building and customizing diagrams in Sankeymatic, we will also discuss design principles, as well as exporting and post-editing tools including Illustrator and Inkscape.

Learners will:

  • Create Sankey flow diagrams from existing data using Sankeymatic
  • Familiarize themselves with customization options in Sankeymatic
  • Articulate key design principles for communicating data visually
  • Identify when to export images as static PNG or vector-based SVG files
  • Recognize how vector graphic editors (e.g. Illustrator, Inkscape) can enhance raw image exports
