Archival Adventures: Piedmont Tuberculosis Sanatorium
Glove up, it's time for an adventure! This week we step into medical history with the Piedmont Tuberculosis Sanatorium Collection. Founded during segregation, Piedmont acted as the first TB rest home in Virginia for Black Americans. Functioning from 1917 to 1965, Piedmont also offered nursing programs for Black women seeking certification in TB nursing. Using medical bulletins, admin records, and postcards, we'll step into the daily lives of patients and explore the deep ties between healthcare and racism. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/Ms2019-009.
Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libaries' Youtube page.
If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, welcome! Please email library-event-accessibility@groups.office365.vt.edu at least 10 days prior to the event.
