Archival Adventures: Shortwave Experiment by Thomas Calvert McClary
It's time for an adventure! This week "Dr. Conklin sets out to abolish a heated argument about peanut brittle" in Thomas Calvert McClary's "Shortwave Experiment" the 12th story from author and sci-fi historian Sam Moskowitz’ list of sci-fi classics from his 1940 letter to the editor of Comet. McClary was a speechwriter, ghostwriter, and author primarily known for his westerns. Published under the pseudonym Calvin Peregoy, “Shortwave Experiment” is the third of his Dr. Conklin stories. Like his story "Rebirth" - which was item three on the list - this story is essentially a thought experiment in cultural engineering.
Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libraries' Youtube page.
