Archival Adventures: Trip to Union Occupied New Orleans | USS Dacotah Engineer's Journal Part 4
It's time for an adventure! This week we continue our series on the Phillip Peltz Journal and the USS Dacotah, picking up in mid-May 1862 as the ship sets out on a round trip to Union Occupied New Orleans. The USS Dacotah was a steam powered sloop commissioned by the United States Navy. It launched on March 23, 1859, from Norfolk Navy Yard and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. On March 9, 1862, Dacotah joined the Union blockade of the North Atlantic. It was stationed near Hampton Roads, Virginia, through September 1862 and then patrolled the Atlantic seaboard throughout the rest of the war. Circa 1896 drawing titled “Genl Butler holding the mob in check at New Orleans” by artist Charles Stanley Reinhart. The drawing is done with brown ink and brown wash over pencil on off-white woven paper. It depicts Benjamin Franklin Butler, Civil War Union army Major General, standing on the portico of a marble building with the American flag waving overhead. He has a stern expression and arms folded, and is positioned before a mob of angry, violent men clenching their fists and brandishing weapons.
