Archival Adventures: Joe Miller Collection

Archival Adventures: Joe Miller Collection

It's time for an adventure! This week we're heading back to the 1980/1990s as we explore the Joe Miller Collection. Miller is best known as a pioneer in the implementation of the barcode system of inventory control in the retail environment. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he worked for Thalhimer's Department Stores in Richmond, Virginia, where he helped create a computerized inventory system. Years later, he became director of retail standards and technology for the National Retail Merchants Association (now the National Retail Federation) where he worked to implement barcode use in retail stores. You can learn more about the collection in the finding aid here: https://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaxtf/view?docId=oai/lib.vt.edu/repositories/2/resources/2323.oai_ead.xml

Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libaries' Youtube page.
