Archival Adventures: Christiansburg Institute

Archival Adventures: Christiansburg Institute

It's time for an adventure! This week we’re joined by Jenny Nehrt, Curator for the Christiansburg Institute, Inc. as we explore the Christiansburg [Virginia] Industrial Institute Historical Documents (1866-1991).  The Christiansburg Industrial Institute was opened in 1866 in Cambria (now named Christiansburg) Virginia, by Civil War Union Captain Charles S. Shaeffer as a private primary school for African American children. In 1986, Booker T. Washington molded the program to one that would emphasize technical training to African Americans. Christiansburg Institute became part of the Montgomery County Schools in 1934 and closed in 1966 when schools were integrated. Take a look at the finding aid for our materials before this week’s episode: https://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaxtf/view?docId=oai/VT/repositories_2_resources_1842.xml

Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libaries' Youtube page.
