Archival Adventures: USS Dacotah

Archival Adventures: USS Dacotah

Happy New Year! It's time for an adventure! This week ArchivistAnthony is looking at the Phillip G. Peltz Journal. Peltz was the chief engineer of the USS Dacotah during the American Civil War. The USS Dacotah was a steam powered sloop commissioned by the United States Navy. It launched on March 23, 1859, from Norfolk Navy Yard and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. On March 9, 1862, Dacotah joined the Union blockade of the North Atlantic. It was stationed near Hampton Roads, Virginia, through September 1862 and then patrolled the Atlantic seaboard throughout the rest of the war.
