Archival Adventures: VT Atomic Energy Labs

Archival Adventures: VT Atomic Energy Labs

It's time for an adventure! This week ArchivistAnthony is exploring the history of Virginia Tech’s Nuclear Reactor. In 1956, Virginia Tech was the first public university to install a Nuclear Reactor Simulator, which also included a two-million-volt nuclear accelerator. Two years later, Virginia Tech received a grant from the Atomic Energy Commission to upgrade the reactor, allowing a self-sustaining reaction. In 1971, there was a “nuclear event” that led to the evacuation of Robeson Hall. The reactor was decommissioned in 1986, after 30 years of operation. It was removed from Robeson Hall in 1989.

Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libaries' Youtube page.

If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please email library-event-accessibility-g@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to the event.
