Archival Adventures: WUVT and the Emergency Broadcast System

Archival Adventures: WUVT and the Emergency Broadcast System

It's time for an adventure!

This is a test of the emergency action notification system. If this had been an actual emergency…

This week, we’re heading to the mid-20th Century to explore the Emergency Broadcast System with the records of Virginia Tech’s student radio station WUVT.

WUVT started as a pirate radio station, illegally broadcasting in September. If officially registered and became Virginia Tech’s student radio station on April 1, 1948. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) launched the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) in 1963. WUVT became an outlet for the EBS and we’ll use their records (https://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaxtf/view?docId=oai/VT/repositories_2_resources_3967.xml) to explore this centralized U.S. alert system.

Join our community collections archivist, Anthony Wright de Hernandez, for a livestream on Twitch! Every week we explore and discuss materials from Special Collections and University Archives covering topics including university history, NASA pioneers, architecture, science fiction, cooking, LGBTQ+ history, Black history, urban legends, and more. Recordings of previous streams are available on the Libaries' Youtube page.

If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please email library-event-accessibility-g@vt.edu at least 10 business days prior to the event.
